We re going to finish up this chapter by creating a slightly different type of Cocoa application. This will be a simple word-processing program (think of it as TextEdit Lite), though as you will see, it will still have some sophisticated features that will cost little in terms of development effort. Start a new Cocoa application. This time, when you select the application template, check the box labeled Create document-based application . In the next pane, give it a suitable name I called this project Text Pal and save it in a suitable location. So what is a document-based application, and what are the consequences for you as a developer From an end-user perspective, Mac applications tend to be either one-pot applications like iPhoto (that is, essentially all of the action takes place in one window), or applications like Pages or Numbers, where you spend most of your time in one or more document windows. In document-based applications, a user may have many document windows open at once and may need to swap the focus between them. they tend to take care of that process for you and not allow you much latitude about where that happens As a developer, you are presented with some slight additional complexity Your primary design is going to be centered on the layout of a document rather than a central user interface, and your coding is going to need to take into account the processes of reading and writing documents Sounds daunting, but as you have doubtless already guessed, Xcode takes care of a lot of this for you In fact, try compiling and running the project right now (just click on Build and Run) You will see that you have an application running with a document it temporarily says Your document contents here for now You can already create a new document, swap between documents, bring up the fonts panel, and so on You even have an About box.

Use the automatic guides to size the Text View to fill most of the window Now use the Autosizing settings panel in the Inspector to ensure that the Text View resizes to fill the window (enable all four of the I-bars and both the horizontal and vertical arrows) Use the Cocoa Simulator to check that the Text View keeps in step when you resize the window There s one more thing you need to do here, and that is some configuration of the Text View Sadly, there is a slight usability gotcha here in the most recent version of the Xcode Tools In earlier versions, the Text View control displayed some sample Lorem Ipsum text when you dropped it onto a window, and you could click on that text as a nice way of knowing that you had selected the Text View rather than its containing Scroll View.
